Wednesday 28th Mar.2012 – Walking **** and a little travelling – sunny and warm again :)

Wrong but close the men the VW camper were not climbers but base jumpers as one was sorting out his shute in the car park, they drove off while we were still in bed and then one of them landed in the road behind the van!!! We missed the spot he jumped from but assume it was from the sheer rock wall several hundred metres high in front of us – shame we missed him jump. He packed up his gear and walked off up the road, we watched while we did your exercises and ate breakfast but his mate didn’t follow him down and the Gendarmes drove past turned round in the car park and headed up again, we don’t know if they were looking for the base jumpers – is base jumping illegal in France ??? As the sun still hadn’t broken into the deep gorge and we were cold we set off toward Superdevoluy and were soon in the warm sunshine again on stunning mountain roads :) We passed a sign for the historic church of La Mere-Eglise so turned around and headed up the windy road and found the most wonderful little church – you might remember from our last trip to France that I am a sucker for a good church – Mag was pleased too as she could use her favourite compost toilet:) I checked on our more detailed map and found that this little mountain road continued round and meet up with the main road, things went well for a couple of miles then the tarmac road finished and turned into a dirt track!!! Being a bit of an adventurer I continued along the track. It was hairy in places with snow covering it in the shaded places but we found the proper road again after passing a farm with a barn full of sheep :) We made it to Superdevoluy at 12:30 and to be honest there was nothing super about it, it was typical of a lot of French ski resorts ugly high rise apartment and no soul – we bought a loaf of bread and left!!! We had lunch and then set off on what we thought was a little amble up the Gorge du Rif and we were gone at least two hours with some serious uphill walking but the gorge was fantastic, very deep at the start and then you got right next to the clear water as it tumbled over the rocks. Although it was now hot we continued to the top of La Gresiere Alt.1423 with great views of the snowy peaks all around. We continued up the road and stopped in the bus park at the quiet and more traditional styled little ski resort of La Joue du Loup where we hope to ski tomorrow if the good weather continues!!! We rang both our Sons and had a good chat and catch up with them :)
